TAKESHI / STUDIO FRESCO

When they first arrived at MINIMARKT our whole team was immediately very enthusiastic about the colorful handmade glasses of the Japanese label Studio Fresco. Each had immediately discovered their favorite combination of colors for themselves! Now that we have the glasses for a while in our assortment it's high time to introduce you the label of the glasswork craftman Takeshi Tsujino closer!

Who is behind Studio Fresco?

My team and I, Takeshi. I am in the studio since my college and we are working with glass for more than three decades.

.

How did Studio Fresco come to be founded in 2005?

There were so many glass works which were so expressive and artistic which was okay for the specific small group of people who like to collect them. However, it was rare to come across works that are more design conscious and user friendly in the Japanese market.

Of course you could find well designed glassware in the market, but usually those are mass-produced products. I wanted to create a category of “craft products” by producing well designed glassware with distinguished techniques of glassblowing and not to over produce merchandise.

What is special about working with glass in your opinion?

Everything. There is nothing like blowing glass. Everyone should try it if there is an opportunity.
.

How did the Solito glasses come into being?

The word SOLITO is a meaning of "as usual". So,  this item can be fully used by anyone, anytime, and for any beverages you like. Even though we are adhered to free blown glass, this one is made to fit different concepts and the mold is the tool of the major character setting for the Solitos.

When the shape is identical, you can always replace (almost) the same glass, if you break it, you would like to use the same glass at the multiple locations, or you would like to add new glass when you have a new member coming into your life.

Can you tell us about the different steps of production of the Solito glass?

At first, you take a gather of glass out of the glass furnace on the end of the iron pipe. Blow up the small bubble and let it cool and make it hard enough to take another gather of glass over it.

As soon as you come out of the furnace with fresh hot glass, it would be taped in the color powder, which is also glass but they are colored with chemical reactions of the metal oxides. So colored molten glass is dropped into the metal mold and blown as it is turned constantly.

The blown glasses are not finished products but still in the middle of the process. They should be chilled to the room temperature by using the annealing oven. All of the works that are blown to be the desired shape are being loaded into the oven and kept in there for over night.

After annealing, glasses are sent over to cold working section of the studio and cut off the unnecessary part of the glass and polished by grinding on the polishing sand, and diamonds pads.

The next segment of the process is very important which we fire polish the rim of the glass so that they have a very thin rim yet it is nice smooth touch to your lips because of the fire makes the glass surface so smooth. But to heating the glass so high temperature that would melt it, even a very thin layer on the surface, it should be annealed again in the oven. This process prevents thermo-shock and protects from random breakage of the glasses.

And then the very strict inspection of the products comes after the15 hrs re-annealing process.

All good ones are cleaned and carefully boxed individually into original boxes and they are shipped out.

Looking at the selection auf Solito glasses - what is your favorite color combination and why?

I like the Aquamarine Blue. Because I simply like the ocean and that color reminds me of it. But be careful! I don’t recommend to use this one to drink orange juice, tomato juice, or anything reddish color since it might turne it into some brownish unattractive liquid if you look at it from the side of the glass!!!:)

So I would recommend to have two glasses. Aquamarine Blue for water and Apricot for everything else. That would be the best solution.
